El Alfarero Student Centre
Santa Cruz, Bolivia
Reaching university students for Christ.
Aim of the project
Project # 91140 Bolivia. The El Alfarero Student Centre will seek to meet a wide variety of student’s needs, including their economic, social, emotional, physical and spiritual needs.
Background
The campus of the state university in Bolivia currently has 60,000 students studying and in contrast to many other Bolivian cities, it has a campus where all the university facilities are concentrated. Many private universities are opening all over Santa Cruz.
The El Alfarero Student Centre will seek to meet a wide variety of student’s needs, including their economic, social, emotional, physical and spiritual needs. The Vice-Chancellor of the university said that the main concerns among students were alcoholism, pregnancy crisis, depression, low self-esteem and economic difficulties.
This centre will build on the experience and success of a similar project which has been run in Sucre and is now functionally independently. The Santa Cruz Student Centre will provide a café with inexpensive, nutritious food, music and games, a system of volunteering, counselling centre, a pregnancy crisis centre, a library and training courses.
Training Centre
The Student Centre will also function as a training and equipping centre to prepare men and women of God to reach out to the society around them. As leaders and counsellors are trained for Santa Cruz, some of these leaders may move to other cities around Bolivia in order to open up smaller El Alfarero centres.
The dream is that the El Alfarero Student Centre in Santa Cruz would not just impact a city but a nation for Christ.
Currently the centre is being built adjacent to the university. Funds are still urgently needed so the building can be completed and the ministry to students begun.
