Welcome to India, a stunning land stretching from the snowy peaks of the ancient Himalayas to Cape Comoran jutting into the sea. Though some may associate India with the major religions of Hinduism or Islam, Christians have enjoyed a long and rich history on the Indian subcontinent.
Today the Christian church in India is finding creative ways to meet the physical and spiritual needs of others.
"Nothing can fully prepare you for India, but perhaps the one thing that best encapsulates this extraordinary country is its ability to inspire, frustrate, thrill and confuse all at once." —Lonely Planet India, 2005
The world's largest democracy and second most populous country emerged as a major power in the 1990s. It is militarily strong, has major cultural influence and a fast-growing and powerful economy.
The country has a burgeoning urban middle class and has made great strides in fields such as information technology. Its large, skilled workforce makes it a popular choice for international companies seeking to outsource work. However, the vast mass of the rural population remains impoverished.
Population: 1.2 billion Major languages: Hindi, English and at least 16 other official languages Major religions: Hinduism, Islam, Christianity, Sikhism, Buddhism, Jainism.
Our main geographic focus is North India. We also support the work of the Ceylon & Indian General Mission (CIGM), a longstanding Indian partner, in the south.
Our five areas of ministry focus are: (1) Leadership development; (2) Church planting amongst Muslims; (3) Church planting amongst Hindus; (4) Health and HIV; (5) Youth and children.
As we work towards this vision, we strongly value ministering in teams, learning local language and culture, working in authentic creative access platforms, modelling and multiplying evangelism, and enabling workers from emerging sending nations in Latin America, Asia, and Africa to join us on the field.
If you would like to be a part of what God is doing in India, chat with our representative in your state or check the opportunities for service online.
