Youth Peer AIDS Prevention
Project # 96654 Malawi. Bringing hope by teaching youth how to avoid AIDS. This program aims to build the capacity of youth in rural churches to become agents of change in their local communities.
Background
Malawi has one of the highest HIV prevalence rates in the world with 1 in 8 adults infected with the virus. AIDS has caused a tripling of the number of deaths among adults each year.
Through the program, youth learn to promote biblical principles of abstinence and faithfulness and provide the necessary long term positive peer pressure needed to bring about genuine behavioural change in the context of HIV/AIDS.
Youth peer educators are trained using specially developed studies written in Chichewa suitable for use in rural settings. These studies cover various aspects relating to AIDS including sexual abstinence before marriage and faithfulness in marriage. Other sessions include leadership, integrity, communications and how to plan and run events.
