About SIM Projects

  radio hope

Through its projects SIM seeks to minister to human need and at the same time to glorify God through Christian compassion.  Australian missionaries are actively involved in Asia, Africa and South America.  These projects require specific fundraising above and beyond the missionary's support.

Projects are carefully structured and planned, are coordinated internationally and are subjected to international scrutiny. Projects are conducted in partnerships with local churches, government and NGOs.

Our project missionary teams currently address the HIV/AIDS pandemic, famine, literacy, disabled children’s rehabilitation and many other areas of human need.

When emergencies such as flood, earthquake and famine strike in countries where SIM has personnel or partner agencies, SIM and SIMAID are able to deliver Australian donations to where they can be most effective.

Ninety five percent of all donations made to SIM projects goes direct to the field.
All our projects require ongoing prayer and financial support.

You can learn more about the projects from SIMaid projects and SIM projects or contact us for more information.

Lima Counselling Centre, Peru (Project # 91886)

Lima, Peru, is home to more than 8 million people. Many live in poverty with nothing more than the most basic education. Violence, abuse, crime, drunkenness and broken marriages are often a way of life and many of life’s decisions are made in ignorance and confusion. People lack values, principles and respect for themselves and others.

Ana and Patricia are Christian Peruvian psychologists with a vision to provide Christ-centred counselling and training to a community diminished by violence, drunkenness, abuse, broken marriages and crime.

The cycle of hopelessness and unprincipled behaviour common to these communities continues on from one generation to the next. Ana and Patricia want to help people make better life decisions and equip them to repair relationships damaged through ignorance.

Australian missionary, Diane Porter, is helping them set up a counselling centre where those in need can avail themselves of counselling at a minimal charge. They will run workshops teaching parenting and marriage skills, and values and life skills for youth. The centre will also provide an early learning centre for children from 6 months to 6 years. This will also provide an opportunity to teach parents the practical application of stimulating the intellectual and cognitive development of their children.

The project has been designed to become self-sufficient after the initial set-up cost and commencement stage. Everyone who comes to the centre will be asked to contribute something and the services will cater for a variety of socio-economic levels. After considerable research, it’s expected that the demand for the services will be high.

Will you help make this centre a reality? Will you give Ana and Patricia the opportunity to help people build better relationships, families and lives, as they share with them the love of Jesus?

The total cost of the project is $22,000
Donations can be made on-line www.sim.org.au or through the SIM Australia office.

Children and Youth at Risk Project (Project # ET 92230)

  Makki Project

Almost 250 children are being helped through the Children and Youth at Risk Program, a ministry of SIM Ethiopia’s Urban Ministry Department, located in the heart of Addis Ababa. This program helps street children, and other children who live with families too poor to cover expenses for school fees, clothing, food and medicine.  It also provides an after-school tutorial program and a Friday chapel service.

Without the project’s help many families would not be able to send their children to school, and others would find it difficult to provide their children with the basic necessities of life.

This program needs people willing to provide ongoing support for children and families in need. Thirty dollars a month will provide for one child to remain on the program. Donations can be made online or other ways to give Please quote Children and Youth at Risk Project # ET 92230

Equipping Women to Serve Women Project (Project # 93902)

  Makki Project

This program began in October 2005 by SIM Australian missionary, Elspeth Slater, to equip women for life and ministry. Choosing the Women’s Association leader for each of the 18 church regions they began teaching in small groups. Sessions are run in one of 3 locations central to their region and consist of 2-3 days intensive study during dry season (Oct to May).

Each woman in turn passes the teaching to their pastor’s wife, who then trains the women in their congregation

These women give up much to be involved in the program but it is meeting a huge need. They are also introduced to God’s family beyond the borders of their own communities by praying for persecuted Christians. This has really challenged them.

You can help equip women for life and ministry by through praying for these women and the outreach of the program or by making a donation Online Other ways to give

Impact of the program

Five days a week Sibidou works in a pharmacy, sometimes selling medicines at the counter, but mostly sitting alone in a back room packaging medicines for sale. Her husband has an important job in church leadership, but due to lack of funds may work three months at a time without a salary. Sibidou’s wage is essential to support the family. They have five children of their own but at any given time they may have 15 to 20 mouths to feed, as children of friends and relatives from outlying villages live with them during the school year.

Sibidou is a Christian, gifted in teaching, counselling and prayer ministry. She longs to see Christian women practising their faith in daily life within their communities. She is deeply involved in her local church and in leadership of the Women’s Association of the national church body. Finding time for all these ministries while contributing to feeding, clothing and educating the family is a challenge. Many times I have seen her shrouded in a wrap, praying at daybreak when other women are still sleeping. Sibdou now co-leads this program with Catherine, who is a part-time Bible School teacher.

Galmi Hospital (Project # NE 84400)

For over fifty years, Galmi Hospital has been an oasis in the desert. Located on the south edge of the Sahara in Niger, this 120-bed hospital provides compassionate care to Nigeriens from all walks of life. Providing medical care meets a real need in Niger where there is one doctor for every 30,000 citizens. The clinics at Galmi serve up to 300 men, women, and children daily, most of whom are Muslims.
Compassionate medical care serves as a bridge to share about the love of Christ.  Each day the gospel is preached and now at Galmi we have two Christian churches.
By giving to this fund we can continue to treat those patients who do not have enough funds to pay for their treatment, and we can continue to employ our four national evangelists. For the most part, Galmi is self supporting in terms of paying for wages and medicines, however we need help to pay for 'extra' things such as basic medical equipment, evangelism tools (Television, video players) , computers, office equipment, operating theatre sutures, etc.
Pray: Please pray that God will use the ministry of Galmi to bring many to know Christ.  Pray for the ongoing need for qualified, committed staff.

Zarely was born 4 months prematurely so her very existence is a miracle.  We got to know her when her mother, grandparents and aunts came to our Bible study.

As time went by, we all began to notice that Zarely was becoming more cross-eyed each day.  This once vibrant, confident, and fun-loving child became angry and scared.  She became so cross-eyed that she began to run into things and fall down stairs.

In Ecuador, appearance is everything. Physical appearance can open the door to a better life or be the cause of great hardship. Her mother began to feel a failure as people told her it was God’s judgement on her. She stopped coming to Bible study and meeting with other people.

Through the generosity of believers in Australia, we were able to take the now two-year old Zarely to an ophthalmologist in Loja City. The doctor said that the muscles behind her eyes had stopped developing. The good news was that he could operate to tighten the muscles and Zarely would have normal eyesight again!  The family managed to raise $100 to put towards the operation and SIM donors paid for the rest. The operation was successful.

Just two months later, Zarely is a totally different child. She is now running around without bumping into things and is a playful happy little girl. She is also getting into a lot of mischief, a true sign that her confidence as well as her eyesight, is back.  Karla, her mother is back studying the Bible with us.

Karla and her family were surprised and encouraged to know that strangers in Australia wanted to help them.  They have told us that this act of generosity has shown them what they have been missing in their lives.  They have come to understand that God loves them and are more eager to study His Word and learn more about Him.

Without the operation Zarely would have been unable to finish school and been shunned by the community.
Begging may have been her only means of survival. A project has been set up to enable us to help others like Zarely to be able to lead a normal life and take their place in the community.

This is a way to open doors into communities where we have already begun establishing relationships. Putting our faith into practice and showing God’s love through our actions has a huge impact on the spiritual openness of people.

Pray: Just as Zarely’s eyes have been opened so she no longer stumbles and falls, pray that her family will have their eyes opened to Jesus and that through the experience of His love, they will reach out to others in the community with the message of salvation.

Radio Hope (Project # 91391)

  radio hope

Radio Hope is a joint ministry of SIM, HCJB, WMPL (World Mission Prayer League), CBI (Conservative Baptists) and IMB (Southern Baptists), seeking to bring the message of salvation to one of the largest, least reached areas of Ecuador in South America.

From a studio in downtown Loja, trained staff have continued to expand their programming and influence over the six years that the project has been operating. The station regularly receives contact from people whose lives have been touched through the programs and from those who have come to know Jesus and are growing in their faith.

Since June 2004, theological instruction has been offered on Radio Hope through the cooperation of HCJB in Quito, a local theological seminary, and SIM. The radio-based studies will offer an academic title to those who complete the courses.

Radio Hope supports the work of churches and missionaries as they seek to see evangelical churches spread throughout the region. The ultimate aim of the project team of announcers, missionaries and board members is for Radio Hope to be run by Ecuadorian nationals.

SIM has several missionaries ministering in the province. The radio is a great help to them wherever it is heard. Land is needed for a second site to install a repeater to extend the outreach of the radio. Please pray for between $4000 and $12000 needed to purchase the land. A short-term team took fixed frequency solar-powered radios out into the province to give to those in poor communities where Radio Hope is heard. Pray that those who receive them will use them and come into God’s family. Pray: For God to work through the programs of Radio Hope to bring many to salvation For wisdom for all those who produce the programs and staff who work long hours to provide a quality radio serviceFor the granting of an FM licence so the outreach of the station can be expanded.

Give: The ministry of Radio Hope continues through the support of God’s people. If you would like to help bring the Word of God to those in need through Loja province, you can give online or contact our SIM office Project # 91391

Makki Projects (Project # 91391)

  Makki Project

Makki Health, Ethiopia

Project # 92212

Makki is approximately 820km south of Addis Ababa and is located in a very remote area among animistic, semi-nomadic cattle owners. A small health station provides the base for mobile outreach such as an immunization program, small mobile clinics and health education.

Community health work with people in mobile settlements is a physical and emotional challenge due to remoteness, severity of climate and type of people.  The health program provides a great evangelistic tool in its outreach program to the Mursi in the grasslands out into the Omo Valley.

It has a very important role in the strategy for church planting in Ethiopia. The Mursi Health Program consists of a curative health facility and preventive community health program. There continues to be a vast need in this remote area, and the Mursi are receptive to health teaching and behavioural change.

It is their desire to have their own people trained as community health workers so there is a significant change in their attitude towards sustainable health service.  There is a mobile component which is important to the spreading of the Gospel in the wider Mursiland. The project has a strong link to other teams working in literacy, understanding the Mursi culture and education. The church is small but vibrant; opposition can be fierce.

Makki Culture and Translation, Ethiopia

Project # 92732

This project is designed to establish a sustainable movement among the Mursi by which community members can produce, utilize and appreciate literature in their  people language. We aim to refine a practical orthography for the Mursi language and help create a literate environment which will give Mursi men, women and children the opportunity to become keen, original and creative readers, writers and problem-solvers in their community.

We want to train Mursi people to produce their own literature both by writing original materials and translating a range of relevant and useful literature from outside, especially God's Word.

Makki Education Pilot Program, Ethiopia
Project # 92786

The objective of this project is to develop, trial and evaluate a program, with government support, to make culturally relevant quality education accessible to Mursi people of all ages, male and female, so that they can:

  • learn useful community-enriching and empowering life-skills, knowledge and attitudes
  • easily progress to and excel in further formal education and training opportunities so as to serve their community and nation
  • increase their knowledge and change from animistic fearful beliefs to knowledgeable theistic truth.

Our goal is for the Mursi to grow both in their understanding of their world and their God. We long for the time when Mursi know their God more, so live without fear of the spirit world.  This project will help the marginalized Mursi people by allowing them to participate in their regional and local issues.  It will also be of a great assistance to cultivate good relationships with the wereda government officials.

The project is well linked with the other SIM development projects in the area and thus gives good opportunity to work for the same goal of glorifying God in the Mursi community.
