Malawi is regularly hit by powerful cyclones/tropical storms and periods of low rainfall/almost drought. SIM Malawi and its partners seek to help support communities in these times of emergency need.

In early March 2023, cyclone Freddy has resulted in major destruction and death across southern Malawi and central Mozambique, making landfall twice in 2 weeks, as perhaps the most intense and longest lasting tropical cyclone ever recorded anywhere. In Malawi, the number of people known to be affected is rising daily, but as of 17 March, sits at 326 people killed and >183,000 people displaced, many from the townships surrounding the commercial capital Blantyre, but affecting at least 10 districts in the southern region. Approx 320 relief camps have been established across the region. Roads and bridges have been washed away, along with hundreds of houses, many more damaged, power and water cut, crops destroyed and exacerbating an already significant cholera outbreak.
